As supply chain problems continue to plague multiple industries, it can sometimes be difficult to get the materials needed for various tasks, including maintenance supplies. As your best source for all types of industrial lubrication equipment, LH Travis has some tips for when you have trouble acquiring the lubricants you usually use for your equipment.

The Backup Plan
It’s always good to have a contingency plan in place for any situation that could slow down production. If you haven’t already done so, take stock of what lubricants you normally use and figure out what a suitable replacement would be in the event of unavailability.

Is the backup lubricant compatible with the current lubricant? If not, there could be issues if the two substances become mixed together. Be sure to thoroughly drain and flush the old lubricant out of the system before filling it with the backup lubricant.

Another thing to consider is whether the backup lubricant is fully compatible with the system in which it will be used. There are some additives that can leach sensitive metals like copper or tin. Check that your backup plan will actually work with your equipment before you need to implement it.

You may be tempted to simply stockpile vast amounts of your preferred oils and greases in order to be well prepared for any scarcity scenario. This isn’t a bad idea, as long as you have sufficient storage capacity – meaning the lubricants will be stored in such a way as to prevent contamination or leakage.

If you have any questions about what you can use as a temporary replacement in the event that your regular lubricants become available, you can always call LH Travis for a consultation, and we’ll be glad to answer your questions.
