There are many different kinds of automatic lubrication systems out there. Two of the most common are single-line parallel and series progressive lubrication systems. But what’s the difference between them, and how do you choose which is right for you? In this article, the LH Travis team will go over everything you need to know.
Single-Line Parallel Systems
Single-line parallel lubrication systems are among the simplest systems available. They use a pump to pressurize the main supply line, which then fills individual injectors, each serving a single lubrication point.
In addition to being easy to install, maintain, and modify, they have several advantages. Each injector can be easily adjusted to accurately deliver a precise amount of lubricant. Plus, each injector operates independently, meaning that if one injector fails or a supply line is blocked, the system is not disrupted.
Of course, there are downsides, too. Because the system can work even with a failed injector, bearing failures can occur if the system isn’t fixed promptly. This means regular inspection is essential.
Series Progressive Systems
Series progressive lubrication systems use a pump to supply lubricant through a master metering valve, and sometimes a secondary metering valve, which are customized to deliver the exact amount of lubricant required to each lubrication point. A series of pistons moves the lubricant from one lubrication point to the next in succession.
Compared to single-line systems, series progressive systems are more complex to design and install, and modifications to the system can require the whole system to be reworked. In addition, if one valve fails, the entire system will fail.
The advantage of a series progressive system is they’re much simpler to monitor. A failure at any point in the system is reflected in the rest of the system, making it easy to know when there’s a problem. Plus, they’re useful for both small and very large systems, and can handle a full range of oils and greases.
