Here are some basic tips to help you get the most out of your bearings.
Bearings are an integral part of so many mechanical apparatuses, and yet they are all too often neglected to the point of causing many machine breakdowns. Here at LH Travis, we’ve heard innumerable tales of lost productivity and costly repairs that can ultimately be traced back to preventable bearing failure. We’ve therefore put together a few friendly reminders to help you avoid catastrophe by giving your bearings the care they need.
Bearing Maintenance
They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and that’s certainly true when it comes to the value of machine maintenance. LH Travis recommends these simple steps to prevent deterioration of vital bearing components.
- Storage. Always handle and store bearings correctly in order to prevent contamination and damage. Store horizontally in their original packaging in a clean, dry, and temperature-controlled environment. If they have been dropped, they should be discarded.
- Proper tools. Use the right specialty tools to correctly mount and unmount bearings. Avoid applying pressure excessively or to the wrong areas, as this can dent or damage the bearings.
- Appropriate lubricant. Ensure that the correct lubricant is being used on all bearings, as improper lubrication is one of the main causes of bearing failure. To better understand the importance of lubrication for your bearings, check out our blog.
- Appropriate bearings. Choose bearings that are appropriate for the temperature in which they will be operating. Steel bearings, for example, can be deformed and greatly compromised in their capacity if heated beyond the limit they are designed for.
- Maintenance. Regular monitoring and maintenance should be performed in order to catch any problems early and prevent malfunctions. Be vigilant for excessive noise, increased vibration, and any change in temperature outside of the normal range.
